Holmium is a lanthanide metal, which gives it a dual role as both a rare earth element and a strategic metal. Holmium is commonly found with the minerals monazite and gadolinite. The metals has impressive magnetic properties that qualify it for use in making the strongest static magnets, and creation of the strongest artificially generated magnetic fields. Holmium is also important for uses in nuclear reactors for nuclear control rods as it can absorb nuclear fission-bread neutrons. Holmium is also a component of solid-state lasers, like those used in microwave equipment in medical or dental offices.
